Hyderabad Airport Becomes First in India to Install Recycling Machines for Garbage

In a way to tackle the amount of trash discarded in airports, Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has begun installing water recycling machines.

The Hyderabad airport is one of the busiest airports in India and has a daily crowd of around 40,000 passengers and a staff of 5,000 working each day. The amount of trash they produce, and particularly the bottles, can only be calculated in estimation.

These newly installed machines will help crush not only PET bottles but also aluminium or tin cans and plastic bags in an eco-friendly way. Currently, two such machines are installed in strategic locations at the airport.

The airport’s programme called #PassengerisPrime prompted the authorities to install these machines that will help recycle bottles and bags.

The primary motive of this initiative is to encourage people to act in an environmentally responsible manner.

SGK Kishore, the CEO of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) spoke to First Post about this initiative. He says that he is confident about people’s enthusiasm to take a step towards sustenance of environment.

“Managing waste responsibly can help us contribute towards building a cleaner and safer India,” he says.

The machines will provide passengers with an option of recycling trash either as a form of donation or they can claim a discount coupon in return. Similar machines have also been installed in several railway stations in Mumbai.

As a mission of Corporate Social Responsibility, the RGIA has also installed a composting plant. This helps in processing all the waste food generated by passengers and staff of the airport.

The steps taken towards curating food as well as plastic and metal waste in the airport goes to show how big corporations can take initiative to spread environmental awareness among their clients.

The installation of the bottle crunching machines will ensure that more people recycle their garbage, at least on the airport.

The reinforcements offered in forms of the discount coupon will encourage passengers to dispose of their garbage responsibly.

We wait for the installation of more of such machines in more places to see a cleaner, greener India!
